Apply for a Habitat house

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Habitat homeowner. We believe that everyone should have a safe, affordable place to call home.

How to qualify for a habitat home.

Habitat homeowners must be active participants in building a better home and future for themselves and their families. Every Habitat home is an investment. For us, it is one answer to a critical need, and we believe that stronger homes will create stronger communities.

  • Prospective Habitat homeowners must demonstrate a need for safe, affordable housing. HFHGML recognizes that need will vary from community to community.

  • Homeowners must also be able and willing to pay an affordable mortgage. Mortgage payments are cycled back into the community to help build additional Habitat houses.

  • Once selected, Habitat homeowners must partner with us throughout the process. This partnership includes performing " Sweat Equity,” or helping to build their own home or the homes of others in our homeownership program. Sweat equity can also include taking homeownership classes or performing volunteer work.

Can anyone apply to be a homeowner?

Yes. Habitat follows a nondiscriminatory policy of homebuyer selection.
We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin.

Habitat for Humanity Application Process

The path to homeownership is an important and in-depth process, requiring hard work, time, and dedication. But this helps to ensure the long-term success of Habitat homeowners. The application process can take 6 to 8 months, and if you are selected for a home, it could take an additional 10 to 16 months for the home to be built. The application process depends on you, the applicants, time and availability, and the home build timeline depends on available land and funding.

  1. Fill out a Homeowner application and turn in all required documents.

  2. Work with the organization’s Mortgage Originator to determine the home loan amount you are qualified for and your credit score.

  3. Attend and complete credit counseling and financial literacy courses.

  4. A home visit with an HFHGML committee member.
